Although kyudo is known as martial art of Japan, what has it become overseas?

Kyudo has spread also overseas. By Eugen Herrigel's work "bow and zen", since kyudo of Japan was taken up as it is a sport which respects soul, its population which begins kyudo in Western countries in spite of a foreigner's showing concern and not being an Olympics item increases, and it has become, so that sports associations are established.

９．How to a bow

There is how to draw the bow called "Syaho-hassetsu" in kyudo. It is explained.

 

It is "Ashibumi" at first. When shooting a bow, it is how to step on the first leg used as the foundation. In order for an arrow to hit a target correctly, it is required to build the right posture first and, for that purpose, it must carry out the right Ashibumi.

 

The next is "Doudukuri." It is the operation which extracts and relaxes the power of the shoulder on the basis of "Ashibumi", straightens the back straightly, and puts power under a navel. Since balance is not good if this is weak, drawing a bow does not improve.

 

The next is "Yugamae." It is operation just before drawing a bow still more. Therefore, the basic field vigor by "Ashibumi" and "Doudukuri" is held, and breathing must be prepared, and it must concentrate and must operate.

 

The next is "Uchiokoshi." Before drawing a bow, it is the operation which raises both fists with a bow and an arrow in a top. As introduced before, there are the two methods of "Shoumennuchiokoshi" and "Syamennuchiokoshi" in "Uchiokoshi."

 

 

The next is "Hikiwake." It is the operation which draws the bow which carried out Uchiokoshi equally [ right and left ]. "HIkiwake" is the operation which takes the lead in drawing a bow, and the quality of "Hikiwake" influences greatly "Kai" and "Hanare" which come to the next.

 

The next is "Kai." In the operation which can be said to be the completed type of "Hikiwake", hit is influenced greatly. Since it hits firmly targeting a target at the time of Kai, it adjusts. Since it is important, it concentrates most.

 

The next is "Hanare." It is the operation which shoots an arrow from a bow. "Kai" to wonderful "Hanare" of a good state is made. It is important to perform "Hanare" equally [ right and left ] from bodily middle.

 

The last is "Zanshinn." The posture after an arrow separates is said. Kyudo was not completed by Hanare. In addition, there are some which were left behind. It is soul and a form. "Zanshinn" does not break down the posture of "Hanare" which is a continuation of "Hanare", but concentration keeps filled.

 

There is a word of "certainly hitting if it pulls correctly" in Kyudo. This is protecting Syahouhassetsu correctly and pulling in a beautiful form. For that purpose, you have to make each operation polite.

Kyudo does not hit a target easily, unless mental concentration is made. If especially the target of a far distance has disorder in soul, they will not hit. Moreover, I think that it becomes training of the heart and flesh since it will not hit if the heart has illusion also physically since a powerful bow is drawn and aimed at. Although concentration does not necessarily stick, it is recommended at those who would like to prepare the heart or to overcome a pressure. Since it can do regardless of young and old of both sexes, it can carry out also as a lifelong sport.

Kyudo values courtesy. An opportunity to meet the direction of one's superiors increases and he masters minimum courtesy. Though it is an individual event, teamwork is important for kyudo. Since a team will be inconvenienced if selfish action is carried out, it must always sympathize with a teammate and must take care mutually. Martial art of Japan is a "way" which is not only the world of victory and defeat. A "way" is "performing the training of living through things one and carrying out body expression of the investigation of appearance or the truth, or self soul." Kyudo will serve as a place of the good pursuit of knowledge for it.
